Current project: GroundUp

The coffee beverage's popularity causes many by-products to be accumulated. The high coffee demand generates organic waste in the form of spent coffee grounds, the residue left after extraction. This is often discarded as waste in a landfill, causing environmental damage due to the release of toxins from the circumstances created in a landfill. Spent coffee grounds are nutrient-rich sustenance that has multiple properties that can be utilized. By exploiting these properties, the spent coffee grounds can be seen as a resource rather than waste. In this project, different utilizations are proposed in the form of products. The utilizations used are; odor neutralization, fertilizer, & filler material. In addition, service is presented, in collaboration with coffee shops, for the collection of spent coffee grounds to gather enough of this reusable resource.

GroundUp is responsible for the creation of new products by recycling spent coffee grounds. Thus creating new value from otherwise wasted material. The products presented in this project are; the biodegradable plant plug, odor-neutralizing disks, and a plant pot consisting of 20% recycled spent coffee grounds.

Math, Data, & Computing

For the skills associated with Math, Data, and Computing I applied in my FBP to validate the effectiveness of odor neutralization and the open-ended data gather from the interviews. The open-ended data was analysed using keyword extraction. The effectiveness was measured using a 5 point Likert scale and summarized using the median.

Some of these skills I gathered during Data Analytics, however, the biggest contribution for my understanding in this competency was made during my project 3. Here we used observational analysis by gaze tracking while the participants of two different groups tested their emotion recognition skills by appointing different sets of emotions to video footage. Thus having to analyse the answer data by creating a confusion matrix to compare the expressed emotion to the given answers. In addition heat maps were formed from the gaze tracking.

User & Society

Continuing on the competencies I developed in User Centred Design and my Internship for the part of game development, where I both used usability testing and co-design. Applying this in my FBP by having user interviews and a validation process, collecting qualitative data. Furthermore, I did in field research by going to a plant nursery to get a better understanding of the current pain points.

In my FBP I had to switch from different perspective due to working with different stakeholders, the consumer, coffee shops, and the plant nursery. This was researched to create a better understanding of the societal context.

Business & Entrepreneurship

Because of the competencies gathered in my first year with Introduction to Business Design and Setting up your Business, I already had an understanding for competition analysis and creating a business model. This I could further elaborate in my Secret life of light USE project and Design Innovation Methods. Continuing on these skills I was able to use this for creating a business case for my FBP. By combining the value propositions and business model to elaborate the business case. Furthermore, with a quick computition analysis and financial model, I was able to make a rough estimate of the potential revenue.

Technology & Realization

Throughout my bachelor I developed in multiple way in this area. With courses as Creative Programming, Creative Electronics, and Engineering Design. I gathered knowledge and skills in coding and creating interactive prototypes. In addition Engineering Design gave me a better understanding of how to communicate with experts outside my field of study. This was helpful in my internship where I work with different kinds of experts almost daily.

Furthermore, I was able to apply the prototyping skills I developed into projects like NoDe or with the course Creative Apps. This I took a step further with

Intelligent Interactive Products where I learned to combine machine learning algorithm and interactive data collection.

In my FBP on the otherhand I focused on low-tech development. Mostly working with hands on creation and mold making.

Creativity & Aesthetics

In the design of my FBP I applied a couple methodology and techniques to further my ideation. By applying skills I learned in From idea to Design and Design and Sesorial Form. This included brainwriting, mindmapping, the RTPD model.

Furthermore, the expertise development I made during the course Aesthetic of Interaction made me heavily reflect in the making process of my prototypes. I tried to find the balance between the material use and the execution.

Lastly, as a separate project I wanted to find my own design style. Therefore I was commissioned to create wine labels for a small wine maker. Here I learned a great deal in using my own skills and style to fit the design brief.
